Sarah Grant House, Daufuskie Island Vacation Rental Group

The historic Sarah Grant Home is once again available for vacation rentals, and Daufuskie Rental Group is pleased to represent this National Historic Register treasure. This unique 1910 house is located in the heart of Daufuskie Island’s Historic District and situated on a beautiful one-plus acre lot that overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway. (You won’t believe the spectacular sunsets!)

The Sarah Grant Home is located on one of the best-kept secrets on the Eastern coast: Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. No cookie-cutter vacation home, this house is tailor-made for vacationers who want to enjoy a true island experience in a historic setting.

The house is a former Gullah residence and is located on the island’s Rob Kennedy Historic Trail. Named after the island’s beloved midwife and educator, a previous resident (Atlanta artist Jack Anderson) was a master craftsman whose woodwork enhancements can be seen throughout the house. For a time, this house served as the island’s art gallery, and it has been featured in Coastal Living Magazine. (See below for more details on Mrs. Grant.)

Your vacation home provides an appealing mixture of comfort (e.g., fully equipped kitchen, fiber optics WIFI, and Smart TV), artistic touches provided by Mr. Anderson, and charming coastal updates provided by the current owners. The large back screened porch includes several seating areas suitable for family meals or for just enjoying the beautiful yard and Intracoastal Waterway vista. The kitchen is spacious and perfect as a family gathering area. The living room includes both a plush wrap-around sofa as well as a comfy L-shaped daybed.

All bedrooms feature new bedding, with the master bedroom connecting to a unique middle room with museum-quality wood carved closets located between the bedroom and its full bath. (A second bathroom is located off the kitchen area.) At the very front of the house is a room with a comfy queen bed with windows on two sides providing a vista of the beautiful yards around the house. Does your own private get-away bedroom sound good? Then you’ll love “The Sanctuary,” a bedroom with a king-size bed that is accessible by a ladder in the living room and also by a staircase (and its own private porch) at the side of the house. An extra bonus space with a built-in daybed is perfect for night sleeping or daytime snoozes.

The Sarah Grant Home is situated on a beautiful stretch of land featuring palm trees and other Low Country foliage. Wander out to the porch or the beautiful lawn with your morning coffee, and let the magic of Daufuskie speak to you as you watch boats head down the Intracoastal Waterway on their way to or from Savannah, just barely visible in the horizon.

If you truly want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world, you have found the perfect location.

You will want to rent a golf cart to explore the island (we will help facilitate that rental) and discover one of the Eastern coast’s best kept secrets. Your first stop may be one of Daufuskie’s beautiful and pristine beaches, including the Bloody Point Beach (site of an historic battle) and the Melrose Beach.

So what are you waiting for? Daufuskie…and the Sarah Grant Home…are waiting!!

Sarah Grant was a much beloved island figure, and served as midwife, Sunday school president, and PTA president during her influential life. She bought this 1910 house from Fuller Fripp for $15 and had it moved to its present location at a cost of $25, thereby paying $40 for her home. Sarah Grant was married to the island undertaker. When he passed away in 1962, she took his place. (As she was already the island midwife, someone remarked that “Granny bring ‘em ‘n she take ‘em away.”) Ms. Grant’s midwife carriage was recently restored and can be viewed at the Daufuskie Island Museum.

Daufuskie Island is a small bridge-less island located between Hilton Head SC and Savannah, GA. It is necessary to take a ferry or water taxi to get here, and we will help guide you through the various options.

Daufuskie has several unique and colorful restaurants where you’ll swear you’re in the middle of the Caribbean. We know you will also enjoy visiting the School Grounds Coffee Shop, located in the old Mary Fields School, where author Pat Conroy taught and which was the subject of his first book, The Water is Wide.

History buffs will enjoy exploring the island and visiting various sites providing a glimpse into the past, including the Daufuskie Island Museum, the historic African Union Baptist Church (now a non-denominational church where you will be welcomed at Sunday services), ancient cemeteries, and numerous Gullah and other structures all part of the Rob Kennedy Historic Trail.

Those interested in unique shopping opportunities will want to visit the Iron Fish Art Gallery, Daufuskie Blues (an indigo dye studio), Daufuskie Soap (handcrafted soaps, lotions and scrubs), Wine and Woodworks, and the Daufuskie Island Distillery. And you certainly don’t want to miss the Daufuskie Island Community Farm, where old and young visitors alike are encouraged to help feed the chickens and even to try milking a goat! There are also a variety of activities designed for the entire family, including kayaking, bicycling, paddle boarding, horseback riding, and frequent community events.
