SARAH GRANT HOUSE
The historic Sarah Grant Home is once again available for vacation rentals, and Daufuskie Rental Group is pleased to represent this National Historic Register treasure. This unique 1910 house is located in the heart of Daufuskie Island’s Historic District and situated on a beautiful one-plus acre lot that overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway. (You won’t believe the spectacular sunsets!)
The Sarah Grant Home is located on one of the best-kept secrets on the Eastern coast: Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. No cookie-cutter vacation home, this house is tailor-made for vacationers who want to enjoy a true island experience in a historic setting.
The house is a former Gullah residence and is located on the island’s Rob Kennedy Historic Trail. Named after the island’s beloved midwife and educator, a previous resident (Atlanta artist Jack Anderson) was a master craftsman whose woodwork enhancements can be seen throughout the house. For a time, this house served as the island’s art gallery, and it has been featured in Coastal Living Magazine. (See below for more details on Mrs. Grant.)
Your vacation home provides an appealing mixture of comfort (e.g., fully equipped kitchen, fiber optics WIFI, and Smart TV), artistic touches provided by Mr. Anderson, and charming coastal updates provided by the current owners. The large back screened porch includes several seating areas suitable for family meals or for just enjoying the beautiful yard and Intracoastal Waterway vista. The kitchen is spacious and perfect as a family gathering area. The living room includes both a plush wrap-around sofa as well as a comfy L-shaped daybed.
All bedrooms feature new bedding, with the master bedroom connecting to a unique middle room with museum-quality wood carved closets located between the bedroom and its full bath. (A second bathroom is located off the kitchen area.) At the very front of the house is a room with a comfy queen bed with windows on two sides providing a vista of the beautiful yards around the house. Does your own private get-away bedroom sound good? Then you’ll love “The Sanctuary,” a bedroom with a king-size bed that is accessible by a ladder in the living room and also by a staircase (and its own private porch) at the side of the house. An extra bonus space with a built-in daybed is perfect for night sleeping or daytime snoozes.
The Sarah Grant Home is situated on a beautiful stretch of land featuring palm trees and other Low Country foliage. Wander out to the porch or the beautiful lawn with your morning coffee, and let the magic of Daufuskie speak to you as you watch boats head down the Intracoastal Waterway on their way to or from Savannah, just barely visible in the horizon.
If you truly want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world, you have found the perfect location.
You will want to rent a golf cart to explore the island (we will help facilitate that rental) and discover one of the Eastern coast’s best kept secrets. Your first stop may be one of Daufuskie’s beautiful and pristine beaches, including the Bloody Point Beach (site of an historic battle) and the Melrose Beach.
So what are you waiting for? Daufuskie…and the Sarah Grant Home…are waiting!!
WHO WAS SARAH GRANT?
Sarah Grant was a much beloved island figure, and served as midwife, Sunday school president, and PTA president during her influential life. She bought this 1910 house from Fuller Fripp for $15 and had it moved to its present location at a cost of $25, thereby paying $40 for her home. Sarah Grant was married to the island undertaker. When he passed away in 1962, she took his place. (As she was already the island midwife, someone remarked that “Granny bring ‘em ‘n she take ‘em away.”) Ms. Grant’s midwife carriage was recently restored and can be viewed at the Daufuskie Island Museum.
Daufuskie Island is a small bridge-less island located between Hilton Head SC and Savannah, GA. It is necessary to take a ferry or water taxi to get here, and we will help guide you through the various options.
Daufuskie has several unique and colorful restaurants where you’ll swear you’re in the middle of the Caribbean. We know you will also enjoy visiting the School Grounds Coffee Shop, located in the old Mary Fields School, where author Pat Conroy taught and which was the subject of his first book, The Water is Wide.
History buffs will enjoy exploring the island and visiting various sites providing a glimpse into the past, including the Daufuskie Island Museum, the historic African Union Baptist Church (now a non-denominational church where you will be welcomed at Sunday services), ancient cemeteries, and numerous Gullah and other structures all part of the Rob Kennedy Historic Trail.
Those interested in unique shopping opportunities will want to visit the Iron Fish Art Gallery, Daufuskie Blues (an indigo dye studio), Daufuskie Soap (handcrafted soaps, lotions and scrubs), Wine and Woodworks, and the Daufuskie Island Distillery. And you certainly don’t want to miss the Daufuskie Island Community Farm, where old and young visitors alike are encouraged to help feed the chickens and even to try milking a goat! There are also a variety of activities designed for the entire family, including kayaking, bicycling, paddle boarding, horseback riding, and frequent community events.

“Had an amazing trip! The daufunskie rental group was very helpful and checked in with us frequently throughout our stay. House is very close to the general store and public dock!”
“This place is fabulous, a true retreat from the main land. It’s rustic but also modern. It’s so cute on the inside and out that it gave us such joy to drive up and hang out there. The location was great for us as we love exploring the whole island. We enjoyed the fire pit and sunsets by the marsh. Thank you for having us, it was a great experience!”
“Within our first 48 hours we saw alligators, armadillo, dolphins and baby turtles going from their nest to the ocean … absolutely amazing experience and island. The house was perfect for us, every afternoon was quiet reading time on the screened in porch enjoying the view, everyone had their own shower and bathroom, and the folks at DRG were extremely accommodating and even checked in to make sure we settled in alright after our first night.”
“Our cottage was just as presented, very clean and appealing. Set up w several spices and lots of good quality utensils in the kitchen. The yard and beach area we perfect for walks and sunbathing. My daughter and daughter-in-law and myself thoroughly enjoyed our time together at the cottage and our travels about the island on our golf cart. The arrangements to and from the island were seem less. Captain Dan was wonderful to work with. Communication with the management was timely and efficient.”
“DRG are fantastic to work with, always offering prompt, accurate, and courteous response and service. This year we stayed at the Sea Breeze condo and found it perfect for traveling with kids – plenty of space, a pool, and direct beach access.”
“The cottage was exactly as described and exceeded our expectations. Most impressive to me was the communication. We received a phone call before we arrived to answer any last minute questions, they contacted us after we entered the cottage to see if we needed anything. There was a minor technical issue in the cottage and their response was immediate. My interaction with DRG was a big part of making this trip good.”
“Deborah Smith and staff were so welcoming and accommodating! Upon our arrival at our cottage everything was clean and beautiful! Deborah even supplied us with a high chair and pack n play. She went out of her to make sure we had everything we needed. There is something magical about Daufuskie – the beauty of the island, the carefree bohemian attitudes – all so hard to leave! We loved the beaches, wildlife, the fun out of the way trips to little galleries, the music and laughter and games at Freeport Marina. Daufuskie! What’s not to love?? Now our problem is to figure out when we get to go back.”
“We are more than pleased with our vacation on Daufuskie! Deborah went above and beyond! She checked on us during a storm and she was in constant communication. We have 3 young kids and she made sure we were all taken care of. She even got groceries for us to make sure we had enough. This house is so quaint and perfect. Has all you need….Thank you for a great trip and we WILL be back!”
“We could not have been happier! Not only was our villa the perfect location for our visit to Daufuskie Island, but the grounds and condo were beautiful! The condo had gorgeous views from the wrap around porch of the ocean and was the perfect place to enjoy dining. The interior was tastefully decorated and comfortably furnished. Just a few short steps away was the beach and pool area. The property manager was amazing and invaluable to us. Every detail of the trip was worked out with her help and dedication to assuring that this was a wonderful vacation. We could not be more pleased with our stay!”
